Pros: Verizon added the Droid X as it’s latest Android entertainment phone. The vivid colors displayed by the glossy LCD screen, along with Google Android OS v2.1, makes this smartphone a great competitor. The extensive battery life is also a major plus.
Cons: Avoid using this beauty in direct sunlight. The crisp picture disappears as the screen tends to wash out. The Droid X has below average HD camera speed that is located on the back side, instead of the preferred frontal face.
Looks & Characteristics
Motorola has certainly made a name for themselves with the Droid cell phones series. With the addition of Droid X to the Verizon Network, the Droid series just keeps increasing in popularity, with the Droid X outdoing it’s predecessor. Summer 2010 seems to be the summer of smartphone debuts with Apple’s iPhone 4,Sprinit HTC EVO 4G, and the Samsung Galaxy S series. After the first generation Droid’s success in the cell phone market, the Droid X will be sure to dominated HTC’s world as a top of the line Android phone. If you are an Android-lover, be sure to check out this high-end smartphone. This impressive phone will surely capture your heart.
Upon opening the package, your first impression is exceptional. It may not have the tastefulness of the iPhone or the elegance of the EVO’s, but it still sports the red eye that everyone knows so well. The extremely small packaging makes me question if Verizon is going on a diet. The eco-friendly box is the perfect size to fit all the necessities: phone, micro-USB cable, and a charger. The absence of headphones is noted, but not missed. I prefer my own headphones anyways. A great feature is the generous 16 GB microSD card pre-installed into the Droid X with an additional 8GB installed in the internal. Speed is not a question with the powerful 1GHz processor and extensive 1540 mAh battery. True Droid followers, along with Droid first timers will love the speed, reactivity, and lengthy battery life associated with the Droid X.
The Motorola Droid X is often compared with the HTC Evo with both phones hosting crystal clear 4.3 inch touchscreens with Android 2.1 installed. Furthermore, both phones have the famous 1Ghz processor, an 8-MP camera, along with a high-capacity microSD card slot for a potential 40 GB of storage. Other features include a high-definition video recorder, HDMI jack, Wi-Fi, 8GB of built-in memory. It should be noted that Android 2.1 can be updated to Android 2.2 once available. Although extremely similar, there are a few notable differences. Droid X has slightly more pixels, about 54 to be exact. Droid x – 854×480, EVO – 800×480. EVO’s 4G Mobile can handle up to eight simultaneous users, while Droid X’s 3G tops at five. The EVO is a hair taller at 4.8 inches vs. Droid X’s 4 inches and a bit thicker (Droid .4, EVO .5 inches). The 0.4 inches in thickness comes from the top part of the phone housing the camera, and is otherwise just around three-eighths of an inch thin. In comparison, the EVO is a half once heavier, something only noticeable on a scale. An important difference is Droid X’s impressive battery life measuring in at 1540 mAh. You get a eight hour rated talk time and only ten days of standby.Overall, both are great technical achievements when it comes to Android phones, or just phones in general.
Using The Phone
The Droid X seems to glow when looking at the display. The luminescence simply radiates when the phone is in your hand. The 228pi pixel density is slightly lower than the original Droid at roughly 265dpi, however difference is not visible. My only complaint is avoiding direct sunlight. The bright sun creates a distinctive glare that ruins vivid color display. Customers who live outdoors may want to consider another phone.
One of my favorite features was the touchscreen keyboard. The keys were extremely responsive even when I wasn’t carefully typing. The phone is a great transition for individuals looking to switch to touchscreen. Overall, the Droid X gets my top scores for social networking phones, with all the gadgets mixed with the speed and quality I am looking for.
The Droid X has everything you need while still keeping it’s sleek style. At 9.9 millimeters, I don’t think Motorola could have invented a thinner phone while still incorporated all the updated features. The Web Browsing experience was everything I wanted and more. The Droid X opened Cellphonetrek.com full HTML page in about five seconds, and roaming through the webiste was just a breeze. Text messaging features were also impressive with the speech texting ability everyone has been talking about. The feature comes in handy while in the car. Once plugged into the car docking station you will see six large selections just waiting waiting for you, making your life a whole lot easier for the person on-the-go.
At 8 Megapixels, this camera is amongst the best we’ve seen so far. Much crisper and clearer then that of the iPhone 4 or the HTC EVO. These results were accomplished outdoors. Unfortunately, similar results were not discovered when we took our indoor shots. The picture quality was often cloudy and lacked the focus we were looking for. And While our images are impressive we saw that the HD video was also a disappointment. The choppy feed and slow uploads was definitely frustrating. The Droid X video clocked in around 24 frames per second, encoded at around 5 to 7 kbps second. The EVO video also was captured at around 5-7 kbps and 24 fps, but footage seemed smoother. In comparison, the iPhone 4 video killed them both, with nearly a full 30 fps at 10-plus kbps.
Main Highlights
When viewing the Gallary, it had a similar feel to the Apple iPods. Numerous settings were available to edit and personalize the phone to your color selection. One great feature from the Droid X was the use of three microphones. With one microphone at the bottom, one at the top, and one on the back, you were able to effectively block out unwanted noises. The outside buzz was elimated and left you with a great call experience. Despite our location, the call quality was clear, most likely due to the extra microphones. Furthermore, both the Speakerphone and Bluetooth headsets met our high standards.
For $199.99 Motorola Droid X is available with a two-year contract from Verizon. If you are looking for power, reliability, and quick response, the Droid X is definitely your phone. The message system, especially when used in the car, was easy and fun to use. With that said, we did have a few issues with the Droid X screen and camera. If you are using Droid X outdoors or taking quick photos indoors, the photos along with the screen may not have the crispness you are looking for.
