The vice president of Engineering at Google Andy Rubin has been the leader of some of the conversations between music labels, for the purpose of figuring out what the Google music service would be like. Andy Rubin was also the brains behind the Android operating system. He has also said that hopefully Google's music service will be up before Christmas of this year.
One of the main reasons why Google is coming out with an Music service is to compete with Apple. At this point Android and Apple are the big dogs out there and Android is the one out of the two with no music service like Apple's itunes.
But for Android to do well they're going to have to catch up pretty quick, especially since Apple has had a 7 year head start and up to 70% of all U.S. digital music sales! But if we actually put in account how many people get androids daily I'm pretty sure they can do it.
