T-Mobile has an astonishing 1.5 million pre orders for its new G1 handsets creating quite a buzz in the mobile electronics industry. The G1 was only formally announced a short while back but the hype has been enough to get the ball rolling big time. The fact is that these 1.5 million pre-sales are not an accurate data sample to even try to predict future success of the Android and HTC’s G1 because they are all existing T-Mobile customers designed to reward customer loyalty. Another astounding fact is the 1.5 million number are strictly online orders, with an estimated extra 1 million pre ordered from retail, satellite storefronts. The big question is what sales will approximate to when/if the other big dog suppliers like Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T get on board for a piece of the Android pie. With the holidays coming up and geeks everywhere needing to sport the newest and greatest tech, we could see the G1 sales jump as far as 5 million handsets. That is half of Apple’s projection for the iPhone, and the G1 has not even been released. How many handsets has HTC made or are making. No one really knows outside of corporate headquarters. We know the preorder delivery date has been pushed back to November 10th for anyone ordering after October 3rd. There is speculation that HTC and T-Mobile are attempting to starve the market in order to boost hype, something we have seen before with electronics. It is a solid plan that seems to have worked in the past. Verizon and AT&T must be kicking themselves in the rear when they see T-Mobiles numbers, but the real question is going to be, are they going to react and take Android into their corporate arms? You would think so, else you are going to see T-Mobile and Sprint split the whole proverbial pie. These early numbers make us at android trek giddy with anticipation as it seems that a lot of consumers think like us and see the potential the Android platform has for the mobile electronics industry.
